Truck unloading

Pilot

Unloading pallets or floor-loaded cases from trailers at the receiving dock without a human operator.

Why we rate it this way

Robotic trailer unloading runs at early customer sites for both palletised (autonomous forklift) and floor-loaded (arm-based) freight, but it is not routine: trailer condition, lighting and load variability make every trailer an edge case. Vendors report throughput on good trailers, not on the fleet average.

What happens today

The incumbent process

Manual forklift drivers for palletised freight; manual crews for floor-loaded cases.

Unloading is one of the hardest jobs to staff at a DC, which is the pull.

How do robots attack it

Robotics approaches

Autonomous forkliftEarly commercial

Retrofit kits or purpose-built forklifts that drive, lift and enter trailers autonomously.
