Industrial welding
MatureJoining metal parts by arc or spot welding to a specified procedure, repeatably and to a standard someone will inspect.
Automotive body shops have welded robotically at enormous scale for decades; the process physics, the equipment and the qualification path are all settled. What is unsettled is who else can afford it — the job shop with a welder shortage and a hundred part numbers — and that is a setup-cost problem, not a maturity one. Cobot welding is the interesting frontier, and it is tracked separately as an approach.
The incumbent process
A certified welder working from a drawing and a weld procedure, with quality riding on that individual's hand and day.
Manual welding is skilled, hot, and increasingly hard to staff; the shortage of certified welders is the reason this task keeps returning to the automation agenda.
Robotics approaches
A collaborative arm with a torch, taught by hand-guiding, aimed at the job shop that welds fifty of something rather than fifty thousand.

This is where the welder shortage is most acute and where the cobot welding cell finds its buyer.
Adoption barriers
Quality sign-off for regulated work
Where the weld is inspected against a code, the customer's quality department, not the plant manager, decides whether the robot runs. That approval cycle is slow and is rarely counted in the payback model.
Programming time per part number
A shop with two hundred part numbers cannot pay for two hundred programs. Offline programming and hand-guided teaching exist, but the honest measure is whether a welder can teach a new part before lunch, and usually they cannot.
Fixturing cost per part family
The weld fixture holds tolerance the robot cannot recover. It is engineered per part family and frequently costs more than the robot, which is why welding automation stalls in high-mix shops.
