Why we rate it this way

This is the reference case for industrial robotics. Cobot and caged tending cells are sold as configured products by every arm vendor, integrators quote them from a site photo, and the payback is a spreadsheet, not a pilot. Penetration is still low in job shops, but that gap is capital discipline and part variety, not an unsolved capability — which is exactly what separates a mature task from a scaling one.

An operator standing at the machine, opening the door, swapping the part and pressing cycle start, typically running two or three machines at once.

The manual method is well understood and its cost is directly observable, which is why the business case for tending is the easiest in robotics to write.

High-volume machined parts on long programmes are where fenced tending cells were first justified and are still bought in quantity.

Batch size economics

The cell pays back on volume, and the shops with the worst labour problem are the ones running the smallest batches. Every hour of setup is an hour the robot is not cutting, so the automation argument inverts exactly where the labour argument is strongest.

Programming skills on the shop floor

The shop that cannot hire a machinist certainly cannot hire a robot programmer. If changeover depends on the integrator returning, the cell runs one part number forever and the customer quietly writes off the rest of the plan.

Fixturing and part presentation cost

The arm is the cheap part. Trays, feeders and grippers are engineered per part and routinely cost more than the robot, and they are the line item that kills a quote at a small shop.
