Why we rate it this way

Fixed machine vision has been production-standard for decades and learned defect detection is now shipping in real plants, not just pilots — which puts this well past early commercial. It is not mature because the two halves have not merged: the fixed station is validated but blind to new parts, and the learned model that handles variety still struggles to get through a quality department's sign-off. Scaling, with the sign-off problem as the gate.

An operator eyeballing parts against a boundary sample, plus a periodic trip to a CMM or gauge lab for dimensional checks on a sample.

Sampling means defects are found batches late, and human visual inspection degrades measurably across a shift — the two facts that fund every inspection automation project.

Validation and quality sign-off

A learned inspection model has to be proven against the existing method to a quality department that carries the liability. That process is measured in months and is rarely in the vendor's project plan, which is why so many inspection pilots never turn into production systems.

False reject cost

Over-rejection scraps good parts and destroys the business case faster than missed defects do, because it is immediately visible on the yield report. Tuning the threshold is a commercial negotiation dressed up as a technical setting.

Defect data scarcity

A good plant makes very few defects, so the training set for the thing you care about is nearly empty. Vendors either manufacture defects deliberately or model normality instead, and both have consequences the buyer discovers late.
